Pubic Pain During Pregnancy

Statistics show that 85% of pregnant woman experience pain, but less than half of those seek care.  As it seems most pregnancy pain is simply tolerated and endured. Because of the severity of pain as well as the impact on function those that have pubic pain seem to fall into a different category. We here at Family Chiropractic & Wellness have successfully provided solutions for those pregnant patients suffering from this pain, and pregnancy pain altogether. Dr. Reynolds has been specializing in pregnant care for over 6 years now and has had great success in helping patients not only survive their pregnancies, but enjoy and thrive during a time when a large portion of expecting moms struggle.

The cause of pubic pain is due to the loosening on ligaments in the pelvis during pregnancy. This is caused by the hormone Relaxin. It’s purpose is to prepare the body for labor and delivery, but the side effect is that is can result in the body being vulnerable to aberrant motion or increased stress loads on specific joints, including the pubic symphysis and the sacroiliac (SI) joints. When the pubic symphysis joint begins to separate or loosen and increase in movement it can be exquisitely painful. This is termed Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction (or SPD). The solution to SPD involves balancing the pelvic structure- including the SI joints, piriformis muscle, iliopsoas muscle, and round ligaments, and leg adductor muscles- to decrease stress and torsion in the pelvis. Also being aware of certain habits or postures and correcting them can significantly reduce the amount of pain. Adjusting the pubic symphysis itself can also be helpful, but must be done with caution as it can also lead to increased pain.  As has been mentioned, educating the patient on how to have proper posture- how to properly sit, stand, get up, laying down, and sleep- is just as essential to the treatment given in office.
